Paraplegia is a type of spinal cord injury that causes paralysis of the lower extremities of body.
It mainly affects the trunks, legs, and pelvic region, resulting in loss of movement.
Paraplegia commonly occurs if the injury is at the level of the Thoracic & Lumbar regions of the spine.
It can be Complete or Incomplete -
a) Complete Paraplegia - Occurs when damage to the spinal cord is severe enough to cut off all the connections between the brain and areas below the level of injury.
A person suffering from this does not have movement of limbs, has no feeling or function in legs, and one can also experience loss of bladder control or bowel control.
b) Incomplete Paraplegia - In this damage to the spinal cord is less severe.
Movement of limbs is still there, and sensation is also intact.
Recovery in incomplete paraplegia is faster compared to complete paraplegia.
Paralysis can cause various issues in the body. All this depends on how severe the paraplegia is and on which body part it affects.
Paraplegia can have different impact on the body, irrespective of which part it affects.
